  •           This five page article commissioned by MacMillan Publishing and published in the Encyclopedia of Public Health, first edition (2001) was written by Nina S. Jones and gives a detailed overview of secondhand smoke (commonly referred to as environmental tobacco smoke) and policies related to secondhand smoke exposure.

SHARING AND CARING - Instituting a policy at home (handout)

  •           These one page handouts are developed for sharing at your place of work, worship or school and is meant to be brought home to share with families, helping them to open the discussion of instituting a personalized smoke-free home policy.

SMOKE-FREE HOMES AND CARS - Building a Program That Addresses Diversity and Community Needs (booklet)   

  •           This fourteen page booklet provides structural and educational information to organizations seeking to institute an educational outreach program within their community.

TALK TO YOUR KIDS ABOUT TOBACCO (family activity)

  •       This two page handout will assist families in talking to their children about tobacco use, its health consequences and how to avoid peer pressure.  Educational information, quiz, activity and topical suggestions for discussions are included.

"LETS HELP OUR CHILDREN BREATHE FREE"

  •       The "Let's Help Our Children Breathe Free" booklet is available now for partnership opportunities. Developed by the National Association of African Americans for Positive Imagery (NAAAPI) as the centerpiece of its Smokefree Air Campaign, the booklet addresses secondhand smoke issues in the Black community.   NAAAPI is asking local and state organizations that provide health and social services to African Americans to join in this important nationwide campaign to decrease exposure to secondhand smoke in Black communities, with a focus on African American children.  The Breathe Free booklet is a companion piece to nine announcer-read radio public service announcements that use the tagline: "Let's give our children the chance to breathe free"

"PATHWAYS TO FREEDOM:  Winning the Fight Against Tobacco"

  •           National concern over the high rates of smoking among the African American population and the absence of available program materials inspired the initial development and current revision to this text. The guide was produced in partnership with key segments of the African American community, including churches, service organizations and educational institutions. It addresses many issues that are specific to African Americans such as targeted advertising campaigns and historical, cultural, and socioeconomic influences. It also offers proven strategies for anyone who wants to quit; how friends and family can help; and how the community and its leaders can promote the value of gaining freedom from tobacco.
